Passing Phrase - www.learnhebrew.org.il

Boker Or

Literally: Morning of light
Idiomatically: Good morning (reply)

This phrase is a standard reply to "Boker tov" which really means good morning. The phrase itself is Biblical and refers to the story of Joseph (Genesis 44:3), and in that case it actually means "with the morning light." Last year during vacation, I tried to wake my teenage son at about 9:30, pulling back the curtains with a cheery "Boker tov" to which he grumpily replied, "Laila tov" and promptly pulled the sheets over his head. So much for wakin' with the mornin' light.
