Literally and Idiomatically: More than the calf wants to suckle, the cow wants to nurse
This beautiful phrase is taken directly from the Talmud (Pesachim 112a). There are a two ways to look at the phrase: The negativists would say “Could it be that the mother needs to relieve herself of milk more than the calf needs to drink it?” Those with a positive outlook would say, “We all possess an inner drive to give of ourselves.” The phrase is often used to describe the situation in schools where the teachers want to teach but the students have absolutely no interest. |
