Literally: The baker doesn’t praise his own bread
Idiomatically: Don’t brag about your own work

“Nachtom” is an Aramaic word for a baker (Tosefta Yom Tov 3:7). A person cannot testify or bear witness to the quality of something he created. Unfortunately, this is one phrase which is only known theoretically and would be the bane of any advertising agency. Imagine Coca Cola explaining, “What I mean by the ‘real thing’ is not that it is real in the exclusive sense but that it has real characteristics about it, much the same as any other cola, but....”
